The Travel Adventures of Lilly P. Badilly: Embark upon a Musical Journey to the Rainforest of Cost Rica.
My parents were born in Hungary -- they immigrated to New Jersey in 1956 -- and my twin brother and I were very lucky to have traveled and visited with many of our European relatives, growing up.
My children, not so much.
Although, I truly DO believe it would be a wonderful adventure, traveling abroad with 4 children isn't very cost efficient for our family at the moment. For now, I'm thankful for television shows like Rick Steves' Europe, or Globe Trekker and the new children's book, "The Travel Adventures of Lilly P. Badilly," that we recently had the privilege of reviewing.
They allow us to visit exotic new places in the comfort of our own living room and we didn't even need a passport!
About the book:
"The Travel Adventures of Lilly P. Badilly" is a children's picture book that follows the adventures of a tiny millipede with a talent for playing the piano. Along with her grandparents, the colorful millipede goes on an amazing journey deep into the rain forests of Costa Rica. The book includes a fully narrated CD (to help little ones follow along) with voice-overs, authentic Costa Rican sound effects and an original music score. For young readers ages 5-10.
About the author:
Author, illustrator, narrator and voice talent, Debbie Glade was a travel writer for upscale cruise lines for many years and created a unique 64-page fiction picture book and features songs and instrumentals by husband John Glade and 15 year-old daughter, Rachel, who the author says is the inspiration behind Lilly.
Debbie Glade's blog for parents, teachers and librarians can be found at:
My take: I love Debbie's illustrations -- beautifully simple and reminds me a lot of the local folk art in my mother's village -- and the fact that Lilly spends a lot of time traveling with her grandmother, as I did.
The Kids Take: Mini-me (she's 7) enjoyed reading about Costa Rica, pointing out some of her favorite insects (ick!) and singing along with the CD. Though, it is one of the largest picture books we've ever seen, the story was challenging enough to add to her 1st grade - entering into 2nd grade - summer reading list.
Want one?
I received one copy of "The Adventures of Lilly P. Badilly - Costa Rica" signed by Debbie Glade, herself (because, she is cool like that) and CD, which I'm giving to one of our lucky readers!
Because, I roll like that.
