I was raised by my grandmother, on my mother's side - having escaped Europe and immigrating to America during the Hungarian Revolution in 1956 with two young children - but, I never really knew any of my other grandparents.
My children are very lucky to have both sets of their grandparents, living within an hour of each other, and my husband, Garth (not his real name) and I try very hard to keep them involved in our children's lives.
This Sunday, September 7th, marks the 30th Anniversary of Grandparents Day, a day set aside to celebrate the bond across generations.
Here are some very cool links to websites that share simple ideas to help families celebrate Grandparents Day:
PBSParents.org - has a great article for parents on ways to help your child better appreciate their grandparents.
BigScreenLive.com - is software that makes computers easier for seniors and beginners, with easy emailing and photo sharing, keeping them connected with family and friends as the kids and grandkids grow up. Also offers online shopping and grandparents can easily access the latest news and fun games on the Internets.
Happy-Neuron.com - believes, while there is currently no cure for Alzheimer’s, increasing scientific evidence shows that actively participating in appropriately designed brain fitness workouts can defer the onset of this disease and other signs of aging on the brain. HAPPYneuron games are both fun and challenging, providing entertainment and good health.
Grandparents.com - (a.k.a. GrandparentsMagazine) is an online community and premier life-stage destination for a new generation of active grandparents who want fresh ways to interact, stay connected, and strengthen family bonds.
While we probably won't remember to shower our parents with greeting cards, this Sunday - what, you too? - my husband, Garth (not his real name) and I try to let them know that we really do appreciate all the things they do for us.
Like driving up to visit us, saving us on the gas and slipping a little "extra something" into our anniversary card to help us with all the back-to-shopping for the kids!
Did I mention, we gave them 4 grandchildren?
[grin]
Aaaaaand, for that we will be eternally grateful!
