Many years ago - around the time when dinosaurs walked the earth and way before children ruled my world - I donned a pair of purple leg warmers, took a couple of step aerobics classes and totally submitted to Olivia Newton John demanding that we all, you know, get physical!
Then, I had kids and today I couldn't even run from my car, to the house, in the middle of a rainstorm, for fear of losing my bladder, or hoping that my uterus doesn't fall out, or something.
Did you know that today is also National Start Walking Day?
Me, either.
The recommended steps is 10,000 and I...for one...can't even begin to imagine how many steps it takes...to get all 4 of my kids to and from school, girls scouts, soccer practice, etc...not to mention, grabbing a gallon of milk and a quick work out on the treadmill.
Until, my friends at Weber Shandwick [waves to Caroline] sent me a cool new Omron Pocket Pedometer to help me figure out just how many steps it takes to, you know, be me!
Features are:
- Unique dual accelerometer sensors let you carry your pedometer in your pocket or bag
- Measures steps, aerobic movement, calories and distance
- Separately displays aerobic steps and minutes walked more than 10 minutes continuously
- 7 day history lets you review a full week of exercise
- Resets at midnight automatically so it's ready to go every morning
- Large display
- Includes Clock
- Detachable belt holder and security strap
Okay, now what?
Well, after spending the morning...like, most days...writing, I hooked that puppy right on underneath my sweatshirt and headed out to finish up the rest of my day:
1:00 p.m. 40 minutes on treadmill and 100 crunches, later.
Aaaand, judging by the, "Oh, I am SO done," look on my face, I was...you know...SO done, but wait...there's more!
2:00 p.m. Back home to shower (without pedometer, you're welcome!)
2:30 p.m. Pick up high school and drop her off at home.
2:45 p.m. Pick up milk 'cause we're out...AGAIN!
3:00 p.m. Pick up 4th grader and begin carpool.
3:30 p.m. Pick up 2nd grader and finish carpool.
4:00 p.m. Set up living room with 7th grader for lip sync practice.
4:30 p.m. Walk Doofus-dog.
5:00 p.m. Start dinner.
Aaaand, lest you think I am a glutton for punishment, I took a selfish-mommy-moment to sit with my sister-in-law and enjoyed a cup of tea.
6:00 p.m. Drop 2 of my 4th grader's friends back home and, having succumbed to much begging, leave my 4th grader with friend for dinner.
6:15 p.m. Finish preparing dinner.
7:00 p.m. Serve dinner, clean up and collapse.
Final Verdict: In just 7 hours -- the equivalent of half of a day -- I was surprised to learn that I had completed a total of 6,618 steps...WHOA!...and burned...um...only 214 calories? Ah well, I'm determined to get fit, even if it means taking it one baby step at a time, right? However, considering my family's history of heart problems and diabetes, it's nice to know that the Omron Pocket Pedometer makes it simple to help keep track of my progress. Why? So, that one day I can totally spoil my grandchildren....of course!
