In Greek mythology, Pandora's box was a prolific source of troubles for the supposed first woman on earth to have wreaked havoc with her sense of curiosity. In cyberspace, however, the name lends itself to a new sort of online radio station that only plays the music you (yes, YOU!) like - did I mention, it's free?
So, yeah...being the curious type...of course, I tried their personalized radio service and it wasn't very difficult to set up a profile of some of my favorite music, considering the complexity that is The Music Genome Project:
"On January 6, 2000 a group of musicians and music-loving technologists came together with the idea of creating the most comprehensive analysis of music ever."
And it sounds...um...very, very comprehensive:
"Together we set out to capture the essence of music at the most fundamental level. We ended up assembling literally hundreds of musical attributes or "genes" into a very large Music Genome."
For example: I typed in "Jon Bon Jovi" and Pandora.com analyzed the characteristics and recommended other similar artists, or songs.
"Two Story Town" (via Crush) was followed by Def Leppard's "Have You Ever Needed Someone, So Bad" (via Rock of Ages) then John Mellencamp's "Hurts So Good" and danged if it didn't work - all three of these boys wear their jeans very, very well!
You can search information about artists, songs and albums, rate and bookmark a favorite song(s) or move it to an entirely different station. Heck, you're allowed to create up to 100 personalized stations.
You can see mine currently listed on my sidebar.
So, yeah...I have can have a little Michael Buble to go with my Spa Radio - or, you can take it with you using their fully intergrated service with AT&T or Sprint mobile phone - did I mention there's nothing to download and it's STILL free?!?
