Do you remember The Banana Splits?
If your answer is:
"Ah, yeah man!"
Or, something close to it, then you've obviously been to Danger Island, watched as Zazu the donkey kick it like Beckham on the Arabian Nights, rode along with Patsy and Tommy in The Micro Venture and their microscopic dune buggy and spied your fair share of laughs, alongside Atom Ant and Secret Squirrel!
[the sound of crickets chirping]
No? That's okay, really. The Banana Splits Adventure Hour ran from 1968 to 1970 and I don't think that even David Beckham was born, yet.
[heavy sigh]
Designed to resemble The Monkees (apparently, I am that old) eating a bowl of cereal, eyes glued to the television and watching The Banana Splits on Saturday mornings are some of my earliest preschool memories.
Now, my favorite costumed rock band is back, ready to introduce themselves to a whole new generation of fans and The Banana Splits are just as cute, as EVUH!
Tra-la-la...la-la-la-la...tra-la-la...la-la-la-la!
"Hey, that's from the Banana Splits, right!?!?"
Uh, yeah, it was their theme song and the first thing that greets visitors to the Banana Splits website, debuting this month for kids ages 4 - 7.
"It's from the 60's, right?"
I'd forgotten that all 4 of my kids have watched vintage episodes played on Boomerang.
"I love that show!"
My middle daughter is 12 and I understand how the girl can't help it, really.
"Great, now that song's stuck in my head!"
Meet the Fab Four of my childhood:
Drooper (he's a lion) Bingo (the cool gorilla) Fleegle (he's one awesome dog) and MY FAVORITE, Snorky the elephant.
Oh, and the five cool things about Bananasplits.com:
1. Phone-A-Joke: Kids can phone in their favorite joke using the toll free number listed in the "Jokes" section. if the 'Splits think it's, you know, funny, it'll be incorporated into the website.
2. Great Music (seriously): Tired of listening to sugary sweet, repetitive, less-than-incredible kids' music? Yeah, me too. Get your groove on with the oh-so-adult-friendly tunes available on the site.
3. Secret Codes: Kids can check in daily to decipher a code, then solve a word puzzle to reveal - what else - a silly, groan-inducing joke, 'Splits-style.
4. Fan Mail: Just like it says - the Furry Four may even answer mine...I mean...yours in a Fan Mail video.
5. The Banana Splits Club: Join and receive a downloadable membership certificate and Club Card - the best thing is, no email addresses, phone numbers, or other personal info is requested!
The OTHER best thing?
They're bringing The Banana Splits back - starting September 2, The Banana Splits can be viewed in all-new comedy shorts and music videos on the Cartoon Network.
BOOYAH - I hope there's a lunch box, soon!
