My husband, Garth (not his real name) and I arranged for a mommy and daddy play date, last weekend and headed over to Jiffy Lube -- we are married, with children, what did you expect? -- and, while we were waiting for the oil to be changed (shuddup!) I pointed to the Rain-X display in the reception area.
"I want a pair of those for Valentine's Day!"
What? Okay, it's not diamonds (see "married" note above) but, since I seem to spend most of my time driving my kids here, there and everywhere, I would much rather he spend the money on my minivan.
Cars can be real high maintenance, especially in the winter, right?
It is with extreme pleasure that I introduce to you Jody DeVere, the President of the Women’s Automotive Association International and CEO of the auto-advice site AskPatty.com -- AskPatty is in the house to answer a few questions about car care!
What is the one piece of advice you always give people looking to better prepare their vehicle for winter?
Ninety percent of driving decisions are based on clear vision. Annually changing your wiper blades, as well as performing quick safety checks, can increase safety during inclement weather, especially during the winter months.
Would you suggest changing the wiper blades at a specific time of the year? Why?
Groundhog Day as an annual reminder for motorists to change their wiper blades and prepare their vehicles for unpredictable driving conditions. Clear visibility through the use of effective wiper blades and a windshield treatment while driving can improve reaction times by up to a full second in poor weather conditions. When traveling at 60mph, a full second can equate to 100 feet and may be the difference in avoiding a potential accident.
Are there any other tips you would suggest to drivers looking to improve their vision?
Rain-X Original Glass Treatment dramatically improves wet weather driving visibility. Simply apply the treatment to exterior glass and watch the raindrops fly off your windshield while driving. Rain-X helps improve visibility by repelling rain, sleet and snow. In tests conducted by a major university, better visibility improved driving response time up to a full second or more. At highway speeds, that's almost four car lengths of extra stopping distance!
What else can people do to better prepare their car for the inclement weather?
Be sure to keep your vehicle in top running order by doing a walk around and check your tires to make sure they are not worn or in need of replacement. You also need to check to make sure your tire pressure is correct. On the inside door of the driver side panel is where you can find the correct tire pressure for your tires. Mid winter is a good time to perform these simple checks and to make sure you are up to date on the auto maker suggested service intervals located in your vehicle owners manual. Doing these regular services and having an authorized service center do regular inspections will help Mom's avoid unexpected winter break-downs, costly repairs and an entirely stressful day, especially if the kids are in the car with you should this happen.
