We love watching the Discovery Channel and often times find ourselves taking mental notes from Bear Grylls (Man vs. Wild) and Les Stroud (Survivorman) on just what NOT to do (or, eat) when lost in the wilds of Africa and Canada.
If, we ever do find ourselves lost...not to mention, ever get the chance to visit Africa, or Canada...I mean.
Josh Bernstein (Into the Unknown) however, is mommy's guilty little pleasure.
[heavy sigh]
Aaaand, not because the man is good looking as all get out (yes, my husband also thinks he is quite handsome) Josh Bernstein is an accomplished explorer, author, wildness expert, archeologist and all the things I want to be, when I grow up.
If it weren't for the pesky little fact that I hate camping, or that two of my kids and I suffer with allergies...I mean...oh, and the bugs!
Still, we love to hike and have spent the last 3 years of our staycation with day trips to The Cape May Bird Sanctuary and Buskhill Falls, PA and I am pleased to have been asked to join a campaign with the makers of BENADRYL and the National Park Foundation (NPF) designed to encourage everyone, including people with allergies, to pledge to spend more time enjoying outdoor moments with friends and family.
Without all the, you know, itching.
To kick off the campaign, Discovery Channel’s Josh Bernstein set up camp at Floyd Bennet Field in Brooklyn, NY to remind people that taking a camping trip can also be a great option for a fun family getaway that doesn’t break the bank – camping out at a National Park can cost as little as $10 a night.
Josh suggests the following tips for enjoying the outdoors and helping to keep your family camping trip fun and incident-free:
- Select the Perfect Campground – Whether it’s a national park or your own backyard, choose a fun and unique location that suits your needs, budget and skill level.
- Know Your Surroundings – Where you set up camp could make or break your experience. Make sure your tent is on elevated ground in case of rain. Check whether there is a nearby water source and find an adequate cooking spot.
- Pack Essentials – Don’t forget necessities such as water and a flashlight, as well as a first aid kit and any medication you may need. For people with allergies, this probably means an allergy medication that can help relieve the symptoms of an unexpected allergy attack. Just as you would at home, keep all medicines and first aid supplies out of reach of the kids.
- Test Gear – If it’s your first time camping or if you’ve bought new equipment, be sure to test it before your trip. You don’t want to arrive at the campsite only to find your lantern doesn’t work or realize you’re missing a tent pole.
- Clean Up – We all love the outdoors and we want to make sure that these places remain vital in our lifetime and for our children and grandchildren. A good rule of thumb is to leave trails and campsites better than when you found them by collecting and properly disposing of your trash and any trash you find along the way.
Okay, so my youngest is turning 8, next month and maybe, just maybe, we (meaning, me) are ready to give this camping thing a try, after all. How about you?
To help kick off the camping season, the makers of Benadryl have offered to send two (2) of our readers Discovery Channel's Josh Bernstein's Camping Survival Kit, including:
- 1 portable cooler to keep snacks cold in summer heat
- 1 water bottle to quench little thirsts
- 1 compass to help keep families on the right track
- 1 lantern flashlight to help light their way
Aaaand, I'm just itching to give it away - because, we roll like that!
