Now for something totally different (and fun) I am entering the ESRB "micro-essay" contest on Facebook!
Why?
Three winners of the contest will receive a prize package that includes:
- A game console of the their choice (Xbox 360™, PLAYSTATION® 3, or Wii™) and three games for that system
- A trip for two and two "All-Access" passes to the first ever PAX East being held in Boston in March 2010, including an opportunity to meet Gabe & Tycho, the creators of Penny Arcade
- The opportunity to have their likeness immortalized in the ESRB's 2010 Penny Arcade PSA ads and to voice a radio PSA ad, both based upon their winning entry
Of course, I'd donate the game console to our local Ronald McDonald House (because, nice matters) and it's sort of fun to think of my family drawn as a character, right?
[the sound of crickets chirping]
To enter, copy the contest entry form below (erase my answers, first) paste it into a new "Note" on your Facebook page and follow the directions within:
IF MY FAMILY WAS A VIDEO GAME, OUR ESRB RATING SUMMARY WOULD BE:
PARENTS ONLY! Titles rated PO (Parents Only!) do NOT exist, really. I just made it up. But, if it really did exist (a rating summary of PARENTS ONLY, I mean) titles rated PO (PARENTS ONLY!) would include games that all parents (like me) can totally relate to and have already mastered, like these top ten favorites:
- Bionic Poop
- Call of Doody
- Destroy All Grandmas and Grandpas Antique Furniture
- Fight Night Bedtime Wars
- Ha-slo-down and Walk, Already
- Madden Uncensored and Retired, FINALLY!
- Modern Germ Warfare
- Puke Heroes
- Sims Spa
- Wii Spa
Sounds like a lot of fun, right?
I PERSONALLY THINK VIDEO GAME RATING SUMMARIES ARE VALUABLE BECAUSE:
The video game rating summaries are great tools for parents (like me) decide what games may (or, may not) be appropriate for my family and just what in the heck those cryptic little ratings really mean, anyway.
ESRB FACEBOOK CONTEST:
The
ESRB is holding a contest on Facebook to get the word out to parents
about its new video game "rating summaries" and how parents can use
them to make more informed decisions when choosing video games for
their families.
TO ENTER:
1. Go to http://www.esrb.org
and use the "SEARCH" feature to check out rating summaries listed under
titles that have one so you can see what they are and how they sound.
2.
Copy and paste this message into a new Note on Facebook. Delete my
answers to the two questions above and provide your own (100 words or
less each). Your Note should be entitled "IF MY FAMILY WAS A VIDEO
GAME..." and must have all of these details and instructions pasted
beneath your answers.
3. Tag at least
10 of your friends in the Note (the more parents, the better!) and be
sure the Privacy setting at the bottom is set to either "Everyone" or
"My Networks and Friends" before you publish it.
4. Once you have published your Note, become a Fan of the ESRB at http://www.facebook.com/oktoplay and paste the link to your Note onto ESRB's Wall. This will serve as your official entry to the contest.
PRIZES:
The winners will receive a prize package including:
- A game console of their choice (Xbox 360™, PLAYSTATION® 3, or Wii™) and a selection of three games for that system
- Two "All Access" passes to the first-ever PAX East (http://www.paxsite.com/paxeast) to be held in Boston, MA in March 2010
- The opportunity to be one of the faces and voices of ESRB's next PSA advertising campaign
In addition to the console and games, the three winners and an additional person of their choosing will each be invited to meet Gabe and Tycho (the creators of the popular Penny Arcade webcomic) at PAX East and be turned into cartoon characters for the ESRB's next PSA campaign using their entry as its basis. Winners will also be given the opportunity to voice ESRB's next radio PSA campaign. The winning entries will be announced via Facebook in the Fall.
For more information and to view the official rules for this contest go to http://www.esrb.org/facebook. To learn more about ESRB rating summaries please visit http://www.esrb.org/ratingsummaries.

Edited to Add: Well, here's further proof that I am a TOTAL dork, I did it wrong -- actually, the "rating summaries" are those paragraphs that describe and explain the content in a game, so the idea of the contest is to pretend your family is actually a video game and write a rating summary to describe what the game was like.
Aaaaaaanway, good luck and remember...write a "rating summary" and don't be a dork, like me...I am a professional!
