Let's face it. Difficult spelling words are the bane of every students existence (adults, too!)
My youngest daughter (she's 9) is discovering the complexities of silent letters and the seemingly endless exceptions to grammatical rules.
Thank goodness for spell check, right?
I was recently approached by representatives of Franklin Publishers (known for their educational language products) regarding a new product geared towards making spelling fun.
Great, another game, just what she needs </sarcasm> I thought.
So, my daughter (her name is Hope) put it to the test -- want to see?
- Launched in January 2011, Speaking Spelling Bee is a digital device suitable for any grade level and includes 3 fun game modes and 3 challenging skill levels as well as word games like Hangman and Jumble.
- There are three game modes (Game Show, Competition and Practice) including three skill levels.
- This handheld device includes a 2.5” Color LCD touch screen, a stylus pen, and a headphone jack for quiet play (YAY!) and retails for $49.99.
So, how's it work?
UPSIDE: Your child can choose to play alone, against friends (up to six players on one device) or against the built-in computer.
Unfortunately, the video was cut off in processing (dangit!) Hope's next word was "spoiled" and, ironically enough, she spelled it correctly (shuddup!)
DOWNSIDE: It's small; the stylus is even smaller and, sadly, we've already misplaced it. You could use your fingers to maneuver through screens. However, tapping the keys are difficult for even the smallest of fingers. Perhaps, attaching the stylus to the unit would help.
FINAL VERDICT: Considering its small size, compared to other handheld games, Speaking Spelling Bee packs a powerful little punch: it is educational AND entertaining, at the same time.
