Last month, my good friends at TheMotherhood invited me to co-host an online discussion about school lunch nutrition with the makers of TruMoo Milk.
With 4 kids, attending 4 different schools (yes, in the same district) we've seen A LOT of changes in the school lunch programs in the last 13 years and (good or bad) there is very little reason why anyone should remain indifferent about their child's nutrition.
Then, Tropical Storm Irene hit, chewed up livingroom ceiling and left us without power, telephone or internet for 5 days and, well, luckily, my kids drank ALL the TruMoo chocolate milk samples, by then.
Today, I feel very gosh-darned lucky, at the very least, to be able to share with you the highlights of the #TruMooMom Talk along with a nifty little sample pack that you and your kids can try at your house, too.
KEYPOINTS OF TALK:
Replacing "other" flavored milk with TruMoo - Some parents and schools are questioning whether flavored milk should be available to children because of the sugar content.
TruMoo: To combat the nutrition deficit from removing flavored milks altogether, “we really wanted to come up with a winning formula – something that moms could feel good about and schools could feel good about."
Product Info: TruMoo is manufactured with pure white milk by local dairy farmers and contains no high fructose corn syrup and produced without the use of added growth hormones.
TruMoo's website allows you compare nutritional information to other kid favorite drinks, like soda, sports drinks and flavored water, or add your favorite to the list to see how it measures up.
My Takeaway: Moderation is the key to raising healthy kids. It's not always easy and, once they get older and start school, it becomes almost impossible to monitor their eating habits. So, we try and pack healthier lunch bags with stuff that we know our kids will eat.
Like, single-serving packs of hummus, string cheese, cut up pieces of fresh fruit (2 out of 4 of my kids wear braces) and buying whole wheat wraps and bread, instead.
Providing consumers information on alternative choices and, in turn, helping us to keep more informed about our purchases, helps, a whole lot, I think.
