As 1 of the 5 people suffering from seasonal allergies in our house (my husband sneezes once or twice around the middle of May and he's done, so he doesn't count) I feel it safe to say that springtime is a bittersweet time of year.

I truly empathize with the folks who have to deal with environmental allergies 24/7/365.

I was recently contacted by the good folks representing Robin Wilson Home:  Ms. Wilson is the designer of the Kennedy Green House, the LEED certified renovation project of Robert Kennedy Jr.'s 1920 home ravaged by black mold.

As a family STILL dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Irene (the witch) I feel it safe to say that dealing with black mold sucks wet poodle.

My middle girl and I are allergic to mango and, cooking for 6 people, I feel pretty lucky that's pretty much the extent of the food allergies we're dealing with at our house.

Still, their schools have become vigilant in monitoring the snacks that they share with their classmates and I can only imagine how hard it must be for those families with children suffering from severe food allergies.

I received a copy of The Divvies Bakery Cookbook and was very happy to learn that there are plenty of yummy treats with no nuts, no eggs, no dairy.

It's no secret, I break stuff (a lot) most recently, my little red point and shoot camera, my beloved HP laptop is sick (battery is fubar) and it's also missing the backspace key.

My Dyson vacuum cleaner, however, is doing just fine.

BamBoo Bears Debut at Toy Fair 2010 and It Was Like I Was There, Almost!

Sadly, I wasn't able to attend Toy Fair 2010 (stupid, work!) however, a lot of my friends did (DAMMIT!) and I hear that Child's Play Communications (my Team Mom buds) presented a terrific social media panel, during the event.

Why is this important?

Well, having received email pitches addressed from "Intern 6" and "Assistant #3" this week, it's obvious that some companies STILL don't get it.

What?

That moms (and dads) are NOT stupid and really do a lot of research (on line and word-of-mouth) before they buy stuff, for their families!

Still, it was like I was there (almost) because, Jen from Ren Beanie sent us a BamBoo Bear and, well, who new that bamboo could be made to look like fur?

Celiac Disease Awareness Month: New Gluten-Free Cereals & Party Recipes from Chex

I first heard about celiac disease (an autoimmune disorder) when my oldest daughter started attending the pre-school at our church and, after presenting her with a tray of freshly-baked cookies, I learned that the director of the program was on a gluten-free diet.

According to the Celiac Disease Foundation:

• When people with CD eat foods that contain gluten, it creates an immune-mediated toxic reaction that causes damage to the small intestine and does not allow food to be properly absorbed.

I also learned that gluten is naturally found in certain grains such as wheat, barley, rye and some oats and, well, that would pretty much cancel out eating breakfast, lunch and breakfast for dinner, at our house.

Not to mention, extra hours having to spend reading labels at the grocery store.

October is Celiac Disease Awareness Month and I am very happy to be able to share information on five new gluten-free cereals, along with a link to some really yummy recipes to share at the Halloween party, this year:

As if parents (like me) didn't have ENOUGH stuff to worry about, right?  I'm getting tons of notes home from schools -- my kids attend four different schools in the district -- about cold and flu season and it can really get downright annoying, after a while, right?

Until, there was a confirmed case of Swine Flu in one of our elementary schools (this week, in fact) and I've had a kid sick home from school, almost every day, since Memorial Day!

We are up to our eyeballs in used tissues, around here, seriously!

Breathless Bethany Buttercup: Free Asthma & Allergy Storybook for Children

 

Did you know know that nearly 1 out of every 10 children in the US has asthma?  My friends at Zeno Group (waves at Sarah) sent me information about a really great (and FREE!) new kids’ storybook, called Breathless Bethany Buttercup that I thought could help parents with asthmatic children.

Schering-Plough has partnered with the Allergy & Asthma Network Mothers of Asthmatics (AANMA) to develop Breathless Bethany Buttercup, a cute and colorful children’s storybook that uses a little girl’s story about her experience with asthma to provide information about asthma management. It’s designed to help parents talk with their kids about the importance of properly managing the condition.

2 out of 4 of my children suffer from seasonal allergies -- not to mention, I've developed severe asthma-like symptoms over the years -- so, this is one freebie I plan on taking full advantage of ordering myself!
