Kellogg's Champion of #GreatStarts

Help us share breakfast with a child in need.

I am very proud to once again partner with my friends at KelloggsAction for Healthy Kids and the Team USA athletes in helping to spread the word about the #GreatStarts program's effort to provide breakfasts to kids who might otherwise go without.

How?  By sharing ways in which you can help share breakfast with a child in need, too. This is my fourth year helping Kellogg's give childhood hunger the virtual bitch-slap it deserves. Why? Long story short, because my family is no stranger to hunger:

Sometimes teens remember the good stuff, too.

One of the most memorable moments of the 2014 Sochi Olympics for our family was watching my fellow Team Kelloggs and Team USA athletes Meryl Davis and Charlie White skate their way to a gold medal in ice dancing.

You see, through our partnership with Kellogg's (an official sponsor of the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Teams) I had the super-awesome opportunity of wishing Meryl and Charlie well and also allowed me the "once in a lifetime" chance to skate with them on The Rink at Rockefeller Center, while taping this segment for the TODAY Show  in NYC.

Okay, I lied. I was in charge of watching everyone's stuff (stupid borked-up back) and WOO-HOO-ing the loudest, take a look:

I am very happy to be able to tell you that Meryl and Charlie are just as down to Earth and awesome in person, as they seem on and off the ice. Both are proving to be really great role models for kids, too.

Especially young adults, who are struggling in school (Meryl was diagnosed with dyslexia and battled with reading until the 11th grade) and perhaps are having a hard time believing in their own aspirations.

I know, because each and every one of my kids has struggled with self-belief (still do, DAGNABIT!) and it doesn't get any easier in high school.

Help teens get a great start in the morning, for real!

Jim Craig and Me

As a Kellogg's KChamps partner, I had the extreme pleasure of meeting with U.S. Olympic legends (that's me over there, standing with 1980 Olympic Hockey Gold Medalist...Jim Craig...seriously?!?) and athlete hopefuls representing Team USA to help kick-off the 100 day countdown to the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games.

I know, who ever thought a dork like me would EVER be able to say that, out loud, RIGHT?!?

Kellogg's is also an official sponsor of the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Teams and, now that we are just a few days away from the opening ceremonies for the winter games (February 7th, whoot!!!), I am super-excited to join the Kellogg's Team USA athletes in kicking-off the Great Starts Program for 2014 AND help share in their Olympic journey!

This month, they've challenged me...personally...to share tips to help other families with teens get the best possible start to their mornings: CHALLENGE ACCEPTED!!!

Aaaaand, if you know me...personally and/or virtually...then you know how I like to keep it real AND snarky.

Teen-friendly Tapas: easy-peasy chicken and waffles recipe.

Chicken and Kellogg's Mini Eggo Waffles
A drizzle of warm honey and a sprinkling of fresh chives dress-up these chicken topped mini waffles, very nicely!

Last month, I was invited to meet with U.S. Olympic legends and athlete hopefuls representing Team USA in New York City to help kick-off the 100 day countdown to the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games.

I know, who EVER thought a dork like me would EVER be able to say that, out loud, RIGHT?!?

Aaaaaanyway, one of my favorite activities from this awesome event was participating in helping to create an absolutely awesome brunch, in my pretend kitchen at The Culinary Loft, where I was given the choice of cooking stations.

They had me at chicken and waffles, here's how it ALL went down in 3 easy-peasy steps:

Kellogg's #GreatStarts 2014 Olympic Team & My Teen Idol, Jim Craig: sharing their stories to help kids in need.

Team Kellogg's
Kellogg's #GreatStarts bloggers, standing left to right: Deanna, Caryn, Jaime, Crystal, Me, Danielle (that's Jim Craig, SQUEEEE!!!) and Fred standing next to the adorable Charlie White.

I am very honored to once again partner with Kellogg's, as well as U.S. Olympic legends and athlete hopefuls representing Team USA, as a Champion of #GreatStarts blogger and...yeah, I KNOW!!!...who EVER thought a dork (like me) would EVER be able to say that, out loud.

Last week, I was invited to meet with these awesome athletes in New York City (I know, RIGHT?!?) to help kick-off the 100 day countdown to the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games and to personally hear each of their great start stories, including that of 1980 U.S. Olympic gold medal hockey team goalie (and my teenage crush) Jim Craig.

After bumping into him and nearly breaking his foot, I mean.

Hard to Digest Moments: Watching movies
with your teens.

Liz and Glen's Hard to Digest Moment

I am honored to be able to partner with Kellogg's as a Champion of #GreatStarts blogger, with many thanks for their sponsoring this blog post and allowing me to share our stories with families (like mine) and (hopefully) help get each day off to a great start.

Have you seen the latest Kellogg's commercials? How'd That Happen and Tweezers are part of the Rice Krispies "hard to digest" campaign, showcasing awkward moments between parents and kids.

When our little ones get smart enough to ask questions that we're just so NOT ready to answer...yet...and, I'm sorry to say, the conversations don't get ANY easier once your kids get older (whenever they actually decide to talk to you, I mean).

So, when my friends at Kellogg's challenged me to capture our own version of a "hard to digest” moment and then encouraged me to create a humorous video about it...*snort*... it was like giving a kid the keys to a virtual candy store.

This time, I asked my 14 year-old son to help and he said yes (cue choir of angels, singing):

How we can help Kellogg's & Scholastic give families free books!

1st day of school 2013
Disclosure: As a Champion of #GreatStarts blogger, I am honored to partner with Kellogg's in helping families (like mine) achieve great starts to their days. I am being compensated for my services for the length of the program.

It's the first day of school, here in Jersey (I know, it is kinda late, but the kids seemed okay wit-it!) which means my crew was up and ready to get out of the house by...wait...for...it...6:30, this morning.

Aaaaaand, I couldn't help but get all caught up in the tide of nervous energy flowing throughout the house.

I was showered, dressed, baked a loaf of pumpkin bread, and then a batch of pumpkin cookies (for good measure), rounding out the morning with 3 loads of laundry washed and folded by...get...this...before lunchtime!!!

Okay, I lied:  the laundry isn't folded...YET!!!...which means I should be crashing anytime now and when the kids get home.

Before that happens, I want to tell you about how we've partnered with my friends at Kellogg's and the equally awesome folks at Scholastic to help give families free books!

On second thought, I'll let my celebrity dad-friend and children's book author Taye Diggs explain it (seriously, we spoke on the phone and everything!)  Why?!?  Well, I love his voice and he's way prettier to look at:
